Cat dermatological problems can be of various kinds, one of the most underestimated problems being adverse reactions to food (allergies and intolerances). In cats, adverse reactions to food cause intense itching that leads the cat to self-injure in the neck, eyelid, and ear areas. The only strategy to tell if the itching is foodborne (allergies or intolerances) is to implement an exclusion diet, excluding previously used protein sources.

Exclusion diets in cats can be implemented in 2 ways

  1. by the use of a food consisting of hydrolyzed proteins, foods consisting of a protein source whose molecular weight has been reduced so that the immune system no longer reacts in an "uncontrolled" manner toward such proteins because it no longer recognizes them as antigens "to be fought."
  2. through the use of a food consisting ofnovel protein sources, towards which the cat has never come into contact during its life. It is necessary to carefully examine what the cat's "food history" has been and to choose a food that contains protein sources that the cat's immune system is unfamiliar with. Usually one goes for protein sources such as horse, deer, rabbit, quail, turkey, etc.

In both cases, it is necessary to choose a food enriched with oils, such as fish oil, krill oil , borage oil, etc. that contain specific fatty acids that can change the composition of the cat's skin making it less irritable.
