European and national regulations are very clear in separating the human and animal food industries. However, there is no official regulation regarding the formulations, percentages and specific characteristics that a food must have in order to be considered Human Grade.
According to the basic rule at EC Reg. No. 1069/2009 and EU Reg. No. 142/2011 every ingredient that is used in pet food must come from raw materials grown/farmed for human consumption but no longer distinct to it for commercial reasons. Therefore, those raw materials discarded for hygienic and sanitary reasons are excluded.
